Exploring Careers in Local Councils: An Essential Guide

Inspiring the next generation of local government professionals

We are excited to introduce our comprehensive resource pack to help councils, schools and colleges connect young people with exciting career opportunities in local government. Designed in response to an ask from our Shareholder Councils in the West Midlands, and feedback from pupils and students, these materials address the clear need for better engagement and awareness about local government careers.

What’s included?

This flexible suite of resources aligns with Gatsby Benchmarks 2, 4 and 5, making them perfect to integrate into existing careers programmes. They are suitable for students from the start of their secondary education journey, with a particular focus on Key Stage 3 (aged 11 – 14).

The resource pack includes:

  • Lesson plans – Ready-to-use sessions
  • Classroom activities – Engaging, interactive exercises
  • Professional presentations – Slides about local government careers
  • Posters and handouts – Visual resources for classroom and careers areas
  • Case studies – Real-life stories from local government professionals
  • Regional competition – Engage students in collaborative challenges
  • Practical guidance – Tips on finding and applying for roles, then succeeding in assessment processes
  • Teachers’ reference materials – Additional support for careers leaders
