Who We Are

Sandwell Council, via the Public Sector Coaching and Mentoring Pool, offers a fantastic opportunity for managers and officers to receive high quality executive coaching and mentoring from fully qualified and accredited coaches and mentors.

Coaching from the pool involves working 1 to 1 with someone who can help you look at how you need to be in your role as well help you establish what you need to do. Coaching can support if you want to:

  • make a change, no matter how big or small
  • think through decisions or re-imagine the future
  • constructively review and enhance your approach and working style
  • improve working relationships
  • develop your resilience

If you are looking for someone with relevant skills to help your thinking so you can develop, then coaching could be right for you.

Mentoring from the pool involves working 1 to 1 with someone who has skills or experience you want to develop yourself in, such as gaining;

  • practical advice or to deepen your technical knowledge
  • understanding of how a service area or organisation works
  • knowledge about how to work strategically or politically to get the job done
  • a way to develop your networks

If you are looking for some development from someone with credibility and experience to support your professional development, then mentoring maybe right for you.

Internal offer – Sandwell holds a cohort of senior executives who provide mentoring internally across Sandwell.  Further information is available on Sandwell Council’s HR intranet webpages.

External offer – As a member of the pool our managers and officers potentially have access to 100+ qualified Coaches and Mentors, working across the wider region.

Who could benefit?

You will be given priority access, if you meet any one of the following criteria.  Are you:

  • Involved in or leading employees through transformation and/or change programmes and supporting transition and effective change management?
  • Taking on new responsibilities or a different job/role?
  • Starting a new project or service review?
  • Taking on a new team?
  • New to the organisation?
  • New to management or team leading?
  • Interested in building resilience during times of change and challenges (such as Covid-19)
  • Assessing how the implications of Covid-19 could impact on future service delivery
  • Returning from a period of long term leave (such as sickness, maternity, career break etc)
  • Looking to develop different leadership/management styles and improve communication style, relationships with colleagues, motivating others and building team morale
  • Seeking promotion as part of a service review?

Beyond these criteria, any genuine request for coaching and mentoring that has potential to improve your performance and benefit the organisation will be considered.

If you decide coaching or mentoring is for you, please discuss this with your manager and ensure support is confirmed ideally as part of your Appraisal or a planned 1-1.
